What we do...
The Galloway Gundog Association will be 20 years old this year. We were first formed as a small group of friends in the Castle Douglas area to help train their own dogs. The Association has come a long way since then and now attracts a large and enthusiastic following from all over Scotland and the North of England.
Now known as “Galloway Gundogs” or simply “The Galloway”, our aim is to provide opportunities for regular competitive tests for all standards of gundogs from the beginner to the well trained. We are proud and pleased to be known as the “Friendly Club” and newcomers are always welcomed. Regular training days and nights are also held throughout the summer.
We run twelve tests between February and September, six of which are in the Annual Gundog Competition, a two day event at Drumlanrig Castle, which includes a Team Competition. We also organise a Gundog Scurry, Spaniel Test and a Retriever Test at the Galloway Country Fair.
Although the tests are competitive nothing is taken too seriously and the real aim is to promote good Gundog practice. No matter what stage you and your dog are at, you will be welcomed, helped if need be, and made to feel part of the club.
At our regular gundog events in Dumfries and Galloway each competition is made up of four separate tests, one of which is normally a water test. Each test has a maximum of 25 points. There are four classes - Novice Spaniels, Novice Retrievers, Open Spaniels and Open Retrievers. The judges are always friendly and are particularly helpful to Novice dogs and trainers.
Many of our members go onto compete in Kennel Club Tests and Trials and a lot shoot, beat or pick-up with their dogs during the season, but quite a few just like to have a well-trained dog and enjoy the camaraderie that Galloway Gundogs provides.
